The Lobster Fishers of Prince Edward Island Marketing Board is the presenting sponsor of the 63rd Summerside Lobster Carnival. The board, made up of twelve elected lobster fishers from across PEI, promotes and markets Island lobster to the world. As the primary fishery in Prince Edward Island, the sustainable wild lobster fishery is valued at over four hundred million dollars. The fishery has 1280 independent fishers, and employs 8500 people.
A number of the board members will be on the front lines of the carnival, cracking open PEI lobsters, and sharing the stories of their industry and why it plays such an important role in Island culture and economy.
Red Shores Summerside Raceway is a vital partner and sponsor of the Summerside Lobster Carnival. Harness racing has long held an important place in the culture of Prince Edward Island. It currently supports seven hundred and fifty jobs, and in the past three years generated total sales for Island businesses of 81.6 million dollars. In that time it created an estimated 2.2 million dollars in provincial tax revenue and 3.7 million dollars in Federal and Municipal tax revenue.
The carnival dates are the biggest week of racing in the year at the Summerside Raceway. Crowds easily move back and forth between the raceway and the carnival grounds to experience the various activities. It is all about the “Island Way.”
The City of Summerside assumed responsibility for Summerside’s primary festival in 2013. Service organizations had founded and operated the festival since 1956. However, as the service groups’ membership grew older and fewer in numbers they found it impossible to continue the presentation of the carnival. A request was made of the City to take over the planning and execution of the community event that is near and dear to the hearts of many.
The Summerside Lobster Carnival is now organized by Culture Summerside, the arts, heritage, and culture division of the municipal government with site assistance from the Departments of Municipal and Community Services.
The Government of PEI supports the Summerside Lobster Carnival through funding from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Department of Tourism through their Festival and Event Funding Program.

What does it take to grow a quality potato? It takes an Island. PEI has been growing potatoes since the late 1700’s, often with multiple generations working together. The pride that PEI growers take in producing high quality potatoes stems from hard work and generational farming knowledge that ensures their success. Over 89,000 acres of potatoes are grown on PEI each year, making PEI the largest potato producing province in Canada and the industry remains the lifeblood of the Island economy.
Island farmers practice environmentally sustainable farming practices and follow the most stringent environmental standards in Canada, making PEI a leader in the industry. Prince Edward Island has such a rich history of growing potatoes and for our farmers, producing the best is more than a science. It’s a way of life.
